About The Office

People make mistakes, and so does the government. After leaving the District Attorney’s Office in 2012, the Law Office of Matthew Hand was founded on the belief that if you are facing criminal charges you deserve an exceptional defense—to show the government how it has mistakenly accused you, or why it should be showing you leniency. An exceptional defense requires at least two things: first, a lawyer who is a true trial lawyer, who can win an acquittal when negotiations break down. Second, a lawyer who understands your dilemma, and who is fully committed to minimizing the impact the charges have on your life.  After defending numerous doctors and nurses who were most impacted not by the criminal charge itself, but by the professional consequence that followed, I began studying and specializing in professional license defense.  The professional licensing boards, of course, prosecute professionals not just for crimes, but for any professional misconduct, and I enjoy defending health professionals accused of privacy violations, boundary violations, drug diversion, patient abandonment, and other disciplinary issues.  In criminal court, I have successfully defended everything from traffic charges to violent felonies and sex assaults.

The Law Office consists of a single attorney, former prosecutor Matthew Hand. You will never be handed off to an inexperienced associate– if you hire me, you get me for every critical stage of the case. In all cases, you will be kept well-informed throughout your case. Evidence, strategy, collateral consequences and more will be discussed with you so that at all times, you understand your options. If you have to take a plea offer, you will know that no stone was unturned before you reached that decision, and that you got the best possible plea offer. If we go to trial, we go thoroughly prepared and with a plan to win.

An initial consultation is always free. If I can help you, I will.

About Matthew Hand

I am a trial lawyer dedicated to defending your rights and protecting your reputation, career, and family. I earned a bachelor’s degree with high honors from New York University in 1998, and in 2005 graduated with honors from the prestigious New York University School of Law.

As a deputy district attorney in Adams County, I developed my trial skills and expertise in criminal law. I also saw first-hand that the system is flawed. It is a system of laws—some good, some bad– run by people, and even well-meaning people have flaws. When you are caught up in this system—guilty or innocent– you need an ally. As a criminal defense lawyer, I work tirelessly to ensure fair treatment and good results for my clients.  As a professional license defense attorney, I try to refute inaccurate allegations and mitigate accurate ones, to preserve my clients’ careers at all costs.

Prior to practicing law, I was a successful options trader on the floors of the American Stock Exchange and the New York Board of Trade (think Trading Places, but slightly different). The high stakes competition of the trading floors prepared me for life in the courtroom. In both places, success depends on confidence, intelligence, and an ability to communicate decisively under pressure. I deeply enjoy the challenge of defending my clients in court, when the government has thrown its weight against them.

In my free time, I make the most of the Colorado outdoors by biking and camping. I also like to sit down and compete—I enjoy chess and poker.  How many people have both biked up Mt. Evans and played in the more sedentary WSOP Main Event? Everybody is unique. I enjoy learning what is unique about my clients, and protecting them.
